Social Media: Protecting a Business’ Reputation Among Its Employees and Customers
The Internet has profoundly changed the way we communicate with each other. This presents both opportunities and challenges for businesses.
Jo-Anne and Brian from DD West LLP will discuss the legal aspects of social media and the Internet as they relate to:- Sources of liability: Defamation, Interference With Business Relationships, Discrimination, Breach of Confidentiality
- Claims involving third parties: Copyright and trademark issues, such as misappropriation, infringement, and dilution; Reputation and Defamation issues; Customer reviews and client feedback
- Use of Cease and Desist
- Risk management (i.e. policies, employment contracts) and negotiation strategies
Jo-Anne Yau has litigated business disputes in the U.S. and Canada for 13 years. She expanded her focus on brand preservation and trademark enforcement to include online reputation protection for athletes, entertainers, sports leagues, and franchises all over the world. She is currently pursuing her Master of Laws degree in Internet Law. Most recently, she has been elected to the Board of Directors of Digital Alberta, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the digital and technology industry.
Brian Meronek, Q.C., is a senior partner at DD West with 44 years’ litigation experience. He litigated with the Federal Department of Justice for eight years. Since beginning private practice, he has handled a wide variety of civil matters, including actions for and against the Government of Canada. He has appeared in all Courts in Manitoba and Alberta, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and in the Supreme Court of Canada. Brian’s work includes complex and controversial legal issues, so he often shares his experiences with law societies and the community.
